Inspired by the Blue Sock Monkey

The wee blue sock monkey, now called Diego, inspired me to get stuck into some jewellery making.

Jewellery making is something I’ve done for years and considered starting my own business a while back. But life and lack of time took over and sadly I’ve not made a think for over a year.  But I’ve just changed all that by creating three new necklaces and re-discovered one that I made some time ago and had forgotten all about.

As modelled by the lovely Diego!

Apologies for my lack of photography skills and improvised backgrounds!

I first made one of these back in September while at The Hairth festival (  He was a fair effort and certainly unique!

After that weekend I promised myself I’d make another, so I finally made one this morning and I’m pretty pleased with the results!

I found step-by-step instructions, to remind me of the process, here:

Here he is!

Snip snip

Been very busy with work lately so haven’t been able to devote as much time to making and baking as I would like.

But I did manage to buy me a lovely new Sizzix Big Shot and a collection of dies last week.  There are so many that I want to buy but have to restrain myself!!

Going to use the machine not only for paper but also to cut some shapes in felt and other fabrics in the hope that I can create some pretty brooches, hair decorations and maybe some peggies.

Quite excited about it all, got so much to learn about it and so much to explore in the world of the die cutting machine!!

Scrapbooking is a possibility but not sure I have the patience for that – yet!

Also going to be reading my mothers old Golden Hands collection to learn how to knit and crochet, if I ever get round to her house to pick up the needles and the yarn! The only thing I was ever able to knit was squares which we used to do at Guides to make blankets for the older people in winter.  Hoping to progress a wee bit and make some scarves and hats and maybe even small-people clothes! May be a while down the line though!

The winter weather has started to throw its wet and windy aggression at us now so there will be less time spent outdoors and more at home.  Hope I can use this time learning and then creating new craft ideas which I can hopefully perfect for selling in the spring time.

Felt making

I bought a felt making kit a few weeks ago, to have a go myself.

So, had a try and it was so easy!

Here is the result of my first attempt:

Felt 2

I’m quite please so far, it didn’t fall to pieces when I rinsed it out and it feels quite firm so hoping it dries out nicely.

There are  only four layers in each, once I get the knack I think I’ll try some thicker pieces and mix patterns and colours in there too.

The instructions say you can add other things in such as glitter, leaves or various decorations.  Not sure about that but will certainly try all in the name of experimentation!

Once its dry I’ll trim the edges off and see how it holds together.  Then I’ll see what I can think of doing with it! certainly isn’t thick enough to use for making anything substantial so could be thats its an embelishment for something. Not sure yet!

Very pleased with myself though.

Time to get crafty

Need to get sewing tonight! Have two plain white tshirts to make pretty for the weekend and I’m leaving tomorrow night!

Thinking ribbon trim, maybe a wee bow or two and a lovely saltire too.  Nothing too elaborate!

It’s all part of mine and a friend’s daft costumes for Saturday night while we’re in London.  Going to be such a scream, and we’re going to be sooooo silly and very Scottish! hehe!

So, less procrastination and more action me thinks.  Hopefully pics later . . . .
