Got a burst of motivation this afternoon so made a batch of porridge cookies.  They’re actually my variation of a recipe I found on the Womens Institute page which we have dubbed “porridge cookies”.  They taste great!

Here is the original recipe:

I also made crackers, something I’ve never thought about making before, but saw this recipe on Dave and Andy Hamilton’s site

And! I made a batch of mince pies, cheated a bit by using ready made pastry and a jar of mincemeat.  On the look out for a good recipie to make my own filling now.

Snip snip

Been very busy with work lately so haven’t been able to devote as much time to making and baking as I would like.

But I did manage to buy me a lovely new Sizzix Big Shot and a collection of dies last week.  There are so many that I want to buy but have to restrain myself!!

Going to use the machine not only for paper but also to cut some shapes in felt and other fabrics in the hope that I can create some pretty brooches, hair decorations and maybe some peggies.

Quite excited about it all, got so much to learn about it and so much to explore in the world of the die cutting machine!!

Scrapbooking is a possibility but not sure I have the patience for that – yet!

Also going to be reading my mothers old Golden Hands collection to learn how to knit and crochet, if I ever get round to her house to pick up the needles and the yarn! The only thing I was ever able to knit was squares which we used to do at Guides to make blankets for the older people in winter.  Hoping to progress a wee bit and make some scarves and hats and maybe even small-people clothes! May be a while down the line though!

The winter weather has started to throw its wet and windy aggression at us now so there will be less time spent outdoors and more at home.  Hope I can use this time learning and then creating new craft ideas which I can hopefully perfect for selling in the spring time.

Lack of creativity

Well, plans for a productive week off both began and ended with the felt making exercise.

I’ve managed to catch whatever virus is going about so have been suffering from a really sore throat and nasty headache for the best part of the last 10 days.

What have I managed to do? Very little!! No more crafting or baking or making, so I’m very disappointed.

Not to worry, looking forward to feeling better and getting stuck into learning to knit all over again!! now my mum is back from Australia she’s going to help me re-learn so I can start knitting sqaures before I progress onto something a bit more complex.

We have did a reasonable amount of clearing out though and my rag/duster bag is now overflowing with cut up tshirts.  And I made the most glamorous draft excluder from a pair of glittery tights and some of the smaller tshirt cuttings.  They really are glam!!

Have managed to order myself a lovely Sizzix machine though! Getting the Hello Kitty Big Shot, it was on offer so worked out cheaper than the “normal” big shot.  Hoping to get a few funky dies and make us some crimbo cards.

Think tomorrow will be a good and creative day . . . .

Felt making

I bought a felt making kit a few weeks ago, to have a go myself.

So, had a try and it was so easy!

Here is the result of my first attempt:

Felt 2

I’m quite please so far, it didn’t fall to pieces when I rinsed it out and it feels quite firm so hoping it dries out nicely.

There are  only four layers in each, once I get the knack I think I’ll try some thicker pieces and mix patterns and colours in there too.

The instructions say you can add other things in such as glitter, leaves or various decorations.  Not sure about that but will certainly try all in the name of experimentation!

Once its dry I’ll trim the edges off and see how it holds together.  Then I’ll see what I can think of doing with it! certainly isn’t thick enough to use for making anything substantial so could be thats its an embelishment for something. Not sure yet!

Very pleased with myself though.

Time to get crafty

Need to get sewing tonight! Have two plain white tshirts to make pretty for the weekend and I’m leaving tomorrow night!

Thinking ribbon trim, maybe a wee bow or two and a lovely saltire too.  Nothing too elaborate!

It’s all part of mine and a friend’s daft costumes for Saturday night while we’re in London.  Going to be such a scream, and we’re going to be sooooo silly and very Scottish! hehe!

So, less procrastination and more action me thinks.  Hopefully pics later . . . .

First post :-)

Dream HouseExcited!! My first post in my new blog!!

So, why a new blog? Because I want to keep a note of our adventures in starting to grow more of our own veggies, live a more environmentally friendly life, be more creative and pretty much work towards a much more self sufficient, healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.

In the process we will all need to learn loads of new skills and make difficult choices and even a few sacrifices.  But in the long term, it’ll be worth it!! I’m confident!

My first set of learning new, is finding out how this thing works and what it can do for me.  Sure I’ll manage to make a ton of mistakes and silly errors along the way but how else do we learn? Better to try and fail and all that.

I guess I could use a few words on “us” but I think I might make that a separate post.

Now, off to explore the wonderful world of WordPress!!
